Getting To Know Surf City

Surf City was incorporated in 1949 on what was then a very unpopulated island off the coast of North Carolina. Many relics still exist from Operation Bumblebee ( a rocket testing project of the US Government) and even a ship wreck! 

Fast forward to modern day Surf City and you will find the largest town on Topsail Island with city limits out to hwy 17 on the main land.

The  is centrally located on Topsail Island, with direct access from Hwy 50, 17 & 210 over the "swing bridge". The "swing bridge" is one of the oldest publically maintained bridges of its type and only adds to the quaint feeling of the island.

The town has the services you would expect from most towns, a full police department with marine patrol, a paid and volunteer fire department with modern equipment, water, sewer, trash and recycling.

The town also features several playgrounds as well as the large soundside park at the swing bridge. The park offers visitors picnic tables, water side boardwalk, a sound side fishing pier and a boat ramp. One the weekends, there are even outdoor movies for the family!

You will also enjoy the community center with tennis courts, gym and fitness rooms. Regularly scheduled classes at the community center are posted on the towns website.

The town has public beach access every few blocks, so you will always have access to the beach no matter when you arrive and not to mention . .. parking is FREE!

While the island portion is a quaint "laid back" island community over on the mainland portion you will find  a robust commercial district featuring Harris Teeter, Food Lion, Lowes, McDonald's, BoJangle's, several ethnic restaurants, medical and various shopping centers.
