Topsail Island Real Estate News – Surf City, NC Real Estate- County agrees to purchase water from Surf City

BURGAW – A lack of water supply for the Rocky Point/Topsail water system has been one of the catalysts for a water plant but it has also been the reason for a deal between Pender County and Surf City.
According to Pender Utility Director Michael Mack, a deal has been struck between the county and Surf City that would have Pender purchasing 200,000 gallons of water a day from one of its coastal municipalities.
Pender’s need for water is two fold. First there are currently 400 to 500 customers waiting in the northeastern portion of the county who have signed up for and have been waiting nearly two years to tap into the county water system.
The county has yet to bring them on due to a lack of supply.

The other reason, according to Mack, is that the county, during its peak use time has gone beyond the state’s threshold of 80 percent use.
“State regulations require all public water supply systems to begin design of additional water supply facilities at 80 percent of available supply and begin construction of those facilities at 90 percent,” he said. “During peak demand days, our supply capacity reaches approximately 85 percent of the available supply.”
Pender currently purchases 800,000 gallons per day from the town of Wallace and the county is currently in the process of building its own 2 MGD (million gallons a day) water plant.
The deal with Surf City would have the county paying $4 per 1,000 gallons plus an availability fee of $600 per month. The contract is for one year and renewable for four additional one year terms until the Pender water plant comes online.
Mack said the estimated daily demand of the Surf City water is not expected to exceed 100,000 gallons per day.
“We hope to have the water flowing in six to none months, leaning more to nine months,” said Mack on when the water will begin flowing from Surf City to help service the waiting customers.
The commissioners unanimously agreed to the contract. Surf City unanimously approved it on Tuesday night.
“It’s a win-win situation,” said Surf City Mayor Zander Guy.
